Three Reading Games To Play in the Car

Keep Your Kids Entertained In Chardon, OH

It's very exciting when your child starts learning how to read.  Suddenly, they can recognize letters and start putting together words and happily spell and sound them out to you whenever they can.  Signs are everywhere and learning to read and recognize environmental print is very important for children.  The next time you're in the car, try out one of these three reading games that are absolutely free and fun for you and your child.

The A-B-C Game -This is a great game if you are on a long car trip.  Start at the letter A and see if your child can identify objects they see along the way that correspond with each letter of the alphabet in order.   You can also mix it up and just write down what you see even if it isn't in alphabetical order.  Your child will enjoy looking for these objects and it helps to keep the boredom of a long ride to a minimum.

The Sign Game - Print out some examples of road signs, restaurant signs, and stores signs that you might pass along the way on your road trip.  Instruct your child to circle the sign when it is spotted along the way.   Again, they will love looking out for these signs and it also helps them to start recognizing environmental print, or reading signs they will commonly see on a daily basis.

The Numbers Game -  Similar to the Sign Game, write down or print some numbers and let your child circle them as they see them on signs and buildings.  Just like letters, being able to recognize numbers is also important in your children's reading development.

These reading games are the perfect way to pass the time on a long car ride and help keep children learning as they go.
