The Hornet R/T is the Dodge brand's first venture into electric vehicles, beginning with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. With a seamless blend of gas and electric power, the Hornet R/T delivers a unique and exciting driving experience. With electric vehicles rising in popularity, numerous questions are piling up, many of which are in regard to charging them. Here at Junction Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want Cleveland drivers to be well-versed in the latest happenings in the automotive industry. That's why, on this page, we're answering a few of the most prominent questions pertaining to charging the Dodge Hornet R/T. Read below to learn more!

How Does the Dodge Hornet R/T Operate?

As mentioned above, the Hornet R/T uses a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain. All PHEVs operate with three primary components: an internal combustion engine, at least one electric motor, and a rechargeable battery pack. Specific to the Dodge Hornet R/T is a 1.3L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, a 90-kilowatt electric motor mounted to the rear axle, and a 15.5-kilowatt-hour rechargeable battery pack. The Hornet R/T achieves all-wheel drive performance by powering the front wheels with the turbocharged engine and powering the rear wheels with the electric motor. To maximize efficiency, Dodge offers Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save drive modes for the Hornet R/T. Meanwhile, to maximize performance, the Hornet R/T comes with the new PowerShot feature, cranking out a burst of 30 additional horsepower. To summarize, this setup gives the Hornet R/T 288 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque, a 5.6-second 0-60 time, 77 MPGe, and 32 miles of all-electric driving.

What EV Chargers Are Compatible with the Hornet R/T?

While three kinds of electric vehicle chargers exist, two are compatible with plug-in hybrids. The Level 1 EV charger comes with the purchase of a Dodge Hornet. This plugs into a simple three-prong 120-volt household outlet. Meanwhile, a Level 2 charger is available for purchase at a certified Mopar parts provider like the parts center here at Junction Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. A level 2 charger is a 240-volt wall-mounted charging station. The Level 2 charger can be used in two ways. The first is to simply plug it into a 240-volt outlet, like the one you'd plug a washing machine or dryer into. Conversely, you can have it hardwired into your home's electrical system for more efficient charging. Mopar partnered with Qmerit for the installation of these charging stations by vetted professionals. You may be wondering how fast these chargers can charge your Hornet R/T. Charging times depend on a variety of factors, including the battery's age, condition, state of charge when charging is initiated, battery temperature, and the available current from the charger's energy source. However, the Hornet R/T has estimated full charging times of 7.5 hours with the standard Level 1 charger and as little as 2.5 hours with the available Level 2 charging station. However, with a Level 2 charger, you can choose how quickly your battery charges when it is plugged in.

Tips for Using a Public EV Charging Station

As electric vehicles become more common on roadways, more charging stations are popping up at convenient locations such as highway rest areas, supermarkets, malls, and other frequently visited locations. You will typically find Level 2 chargers at these public charging stations. However, Level 3 chargers, also known as DC Fast Chargers, can also be found at some charging stations. Level 3 chargers are only compatible with fully electric vehicles. Therefore it is important to ensure that you choose the right charger for your Hornet R/T when using a public charging station. Most EV charging station etiquette tips go along with the golden rule of treating others how you wish to be treated. For example, it'd be frustrating to pull up to a charging station only to find that cars are parked in the charging spots without charging, so be sure never to use a charging station as a parking spot. This one should go without saying, but it is essential to never unplug another EV owner's vehicle at a charging station. Lastly, you should pay close attention to signage around the station, as some have time limits and other rules and regulations.
